- chro|mo|some
- chro|mo|some «KROH muh sohm», noun.any one of the rod-shaped bodies found in the nucleus of a cell that appear when the cell divides. Chromosomes are derived from the parents and carry the genes that determine heredity, controlling the development of the organism and determining its nature. They are of a definite number for each species and occur in pairs in most organisms, except in their germ cells. The genetic material in each chromosome is a long polynucleotide strand, usually of deoxyribonucleic acid but sometimes of ribonucleic acid, set in a protein matrix. »
The human embryo develops into a person…because the material carried in its chromosomes, its constellation of genes, initiates and guides a marvelously coordinated sequence of reactions that leads inevitably, under normal conditions, to the differentiation and growth of a human being (Atlantic).
